Events – going on throughout the year

Thursday, 28 July, 2011

“There’s never any shortage of social events in the South Cambridgeshire constituency,” says Denise Smith, who co-ordinates our diary from the office in Hardwick.  “Most events are organised by individual Association branches and the ever-active Women’s Committee – we owe everyone involved a big debt of thanks for all the hard work they put in.”

Some events, such as those in Bar Hill [July 24], Girton [August 6] and Comberton [14 August], have been regular entries in the diary for many years, usually followed by another event in the winter, while others such as the Summer Drinks Party held in Harston on 24 June and are quite new.

“There’s lot of a variety in the events,” says Denise, “from the coffee mornings celebrating St Valentine’s day earlier this year to two ‘Pimms’ events on 2nd and 17 July in Shepreth and Girton.”  The latter will include music by Colin Barker, long-time Officer of the Association and highly accomplished guitar player and singer.

Later in the year, there’s the inter-constituency pub-style quiz in Bottisham, a ‘topical discussion’ in Comberton, an autumn supper event in Swavesey, mulled wine in Girton, the Bar Hill Christmas lunch, ‘winter warmers’ in Great Chishill and a rather special Christmas drinks party to look forward to.

“While the prime purpose of each event is to raise money for the Association, the real point of going, apart from hopefully winning something in the inevitable raffle, is meet fellow Conservatives and have an enjoyable time,” says Denise.

Andrew and Sally Lansley go to as many events as their busy schedule allows; MEP Vicky Ford was at the midsummer tea party in Long Road on 19 June.

Paid up Association members are regularly mailed with reminders and flyers of all the social events – which, of course, are also listed on this website.

Our pictures show a selection of events from the 2010 season – with Denise Smith in the top photo talking with Bunty Waters and James Hockney at the Bar Hill BBQ.  In order below are events at Babraham, Bar Hill, Comberton, Shepreth, Whittlesford and Bourne.
